Unrest in Iran on the eve of the elections

According to the news come from Iran, some unrest has happened during last two weeks in Khuzestan province, what is in southern region of this country. 3 men were killed and 49 arrested in a result of the unrest. It is stated that all of three of killed men have died in a result of tortures in the jail.

By the information, a group of youth held a propaganda concerning to boycott the forthcoming parliamentary elections. They invited the people not to participate in the elections and not to recognize the parliamentary elections. This effort caused a clash between the police and people. In the information given by Ahvaz Human Rights Organization, the conflicts started in the city of Shush of Khuzestan. According to the information given by the organization, a group of youth was sticking on the walls of the city the notices in regard to boycotting the elections. Under this pretence the police was attacking the homes of the national activists and detained some of them. Protesting against these events the city population clashed with the police. Then the clashes passes to the city of Hamidiyya and the police arrested some national activists in this city too. The headmasters of some schools of the city of Hamidiyya are also among the arrested men. 3 of the men arrested during the unrest have died in a result of the tortures by the police and security services, stated in the information of Ahvaz Human Rights Organization too. The organization gave the information on their names and identities.

The local information resources of Khuzestan province have also given the information on the incident. The sources confirmed the number of the arrested men being 49 and published the information about the identities of the dead. It was imposed a curfew in some cities of Khuzestan province after the incidents. One of the former SEPAH officers was also arrested during the incidents.

To note, the political tension is increasing in Iran, as the parliamentary elections approaches, which will be held in this country in a few weeks. Many reformist opposition forces have already refused to join to the elections. Though they don’t’ boycott the elections officially, they have stated not to join to the elections. And any provinces with ethnic problems demonstrate inactivity from the viewpoint of participation in the elections held in Iran. To mention, Arabians, Turks, Kurds and Balujs have demands their rights in Iran for a few years and struggled against discrimination of the central authorities. But the authorities have displayed inattentiveness towards their protests and demands up to now. In this context, the ethnic groups don’t seem interested in joining to the elections too. But they hold such propaganda in an underhand way, as they don’t have mass means of propaganda. Since the authorities look at these elections as an important process from the viewpoint of security of the regime, they consider such underhand propaganda as propaganda against the regime. For this reason they show severe attention.
